Established after World War II in the Western countries as a multi-disciplinary studies, it later developed into an inter-disciplinary studies, the area studies have developed into a fundamental, interdisciplinary science, and an applied orientation. Since its inception, in order to meet the needs of practice, area studies have undergone many development progresses, becoming modern area studies at the end of the 20th century and global studies at the beginning of the 21st century.

      I. Background - Rationale of the study:

Established after World War II in the Western countries as a multi-disciplinary studies, it later developed into an inter-disciplinary studies, the area studies have developed into a fundamental, interdisciplinary science, and an applied orientation. Since its inception, in order to meet the needs of practice, area studies have undergone many development progresses, becoming modern area studies at the end of the 20th century and global studies at the beginning of the 21st century.

Previously, area studies aimed to bring a general understanding of a certain historical-cultural space. The modern area studies aim to bring a general and profound understanding of sustainable development spaces, which indicate and interdisciplinarily evaluate the resources, potential and opportunities for development of research space. Based on that, the studies should provide solutions that have high scientific and practical value, directly contributing to the regional sustainable development strategy. Furthermore, area studies must place that sustainable development space into a global multidimensional perspective and interaction.

Based on the foundation of area studies, Vietnamese studies were established and strongly developed in the world and in Vietnam. Vietnamese studies have significantly contributed in providing both general and in-depth knowledge about Vietnam in history, present and future. In that process, studying Vietnam has also attracted many national and international scientists, from a variety of disciplines including the humanities and social sciences, and also in new research fields such as communication, technology ...

However, in the past years, area studies in general and Vietnamese studies in particular have experienced many ups and downs and are currently facing many serious challenges. In research and training, it seems that Vietnamese studies in both Vietnam and abroad are failing to catch up with the changes in theories, methods and approaches of modern area studies, which do not meet the requirements of practice. Around the world, many well-known academic training and research institutes in South East Asia studies and Vietnamese studies have fallen into serious crisis, some of which have been completely closed. Meanwhile, many institutes continue to successfully organize training and research activities on the basis of the modern area studies and global studies.

To summarize the experience of organizing training and research of Vietnamese studies in Vietnam and around the world, to exchange and reach the basic agreement on the academic foundation and development orientation of Vietnamese studies based on the basis of the modern area studies and global studies, the Institute of Vietnamese Studies and Development Sciences intends to organize an international scientific conference on:
